The same hope but a new name, reflecting our AIM that we will soon see women and men freely working together at all levels of ministry in the LCA/LCNZ, and our belief that each supporter has a part to play in making this a reality. Following the post-General Synod gatherings in Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne we have collated a list of suggestions for what congregations and individuals can do.

In 1954 the then President of the ELCA presented a conference paper to the convention of the N.Z. Lutheran Church in which he claimed that 'according to the order of creation a more subordinate position has been given to woman than to man'. The following year, as an itinerant missionary in the Auckland Province, I became aware how distressed some women and men were in response to his claim. Sixteen years later I addressed and refuted these and related claims in a Doctor of Ministry thesis submitted to Luther Theological Seminary, St Paul, Minn. "Neither Male nor Female - Towards a Theology and Practice of Equality of the Sexes in the Lutheran Church of Australia". Since women have continued to be discriminated against in the LCA, I wrote the book "Neither Male nor Female - the Bible, Women and the Ministry in the Church" which was published by Coventry Press in December 2020. It exposes the misuse of the Creation and Fall narratives, 1 Cor. 14:34-35 and 1 Tim. 2:8-15, since the final paragraph of Article VI of Thesis of Agreement was written in 1950. But it does more - it highlights the powerful declaration of Paul in Gal.3:26-29 and the social and religious implications for Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, since they are baptised in Christ. 'One's sexuality is not the basis on which a person can claim a position of superiority or advantage to which another is not entitled - neither in that person's relationship with God, nor in respect to another human being' (p.31).
